Kentucky Resources

  • Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky - The Foundation makes grants, supports research, holds educational forums and convenes communities to engage and develop the capacity of the Commonwealth to improve the health and quality of life of all Kentuckians.
  • Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services - The Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) is home to most of the state's human services and health care programs, including Medicaid, the Department for Community Based Services and the Department for Public Health.
  • Kentucky Children’s Oral Health Profiles (2001) – State and regional comparisons on key oral health measures in Kentucky produced by the Kentucky Department for Public Health, Cabinet for Health Services and the University of Kentucky.
  • Kentucky Voices for Health - Kentucky Voices for Health is a coalition of Kentuckians that works to find the best health care solutions, to build a healthier Kentucky.
  • Kentucky’s Cavity (2005) –Report by Kentucky Youth Advocates on parents’ concerns on children’s dental care in their communities based on findings from focus groups.
  • Open Wide or Lock Jaw (2003) – Issue brief on children’s dental health access in Kentucky produced by Kentucky Youth Advocates.
  • Partnership for a Fit Kentucky - The Partnership for a Fit Kentucky is a public/private partnership which supports the Kentucky Department for Public Health’s CDC Obesity Prevention Grant. The focus is on promoting nutrition and physically active communities. The partnership links resources, network programs, provides tools that work, and strengthens partnerships in order to develop cutting edge initiatives. In 2009, the partnership produced “Shaping Kentucky’s Future: Policies to Reduce Obesity.” This report provides many positive recommendations to encourage healthier lifestyles among children and adults and to promote wellness.

National Resources

  • Action for Healthy Kids - Action for Healthy Kids is a nonprofit and volunteer network fighting childhood obesity and undernourishment by working with schools to improve nutrition and physical activity to help kids learn to eat right, be active every day and be ready to learn.
  • Annie E. Casey Foundation - The Annie E. Casey Foundation fosters public policies, human-service reforms, and community supports that more effectively meet the needs of today’s vulnerable children and families.
  • American Academy of Pediatrics - The American Academy of Pediatrics is an organization of pediatricians committed to the attainment of optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
  • American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry - The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advocates policies, guidelines and programs that promote optimal oral health and oral health care for children.
  • American Lung Association - The American Lung Association strives to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.
  • American Medical Association - The American Medical Association helps doctors help patients by uniting physicians nationwide to work on the most important professional and public health issues.
  • American Public Health Association - The American Public Health Association aims to protect all Americans and their communities from preventable, serious health threats and strives to assure community-based health promotion and disease prevention activities and preventive health services are universally accessible in the United States.
  • Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids - The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids fights to reduce tobacco use and its devastating consequences in the United States and around the world. By changing public attitudes and public policies on tobacco, the Campaign prevents children from smoking, helps smokers quit and protects everyone from secondhand smoke.
  • Carsey Institute - The Carsey Institute conducts policy research on vulnerable children, youth, and families, and provides policy makers the information they need to effect change in their communities.
  • Center for Urban Policy and the Environment - The Center for Urban Policy and the Environment focuses on urban policy, intergovernmental cooperation, community and economic development, housing, environmental issues, and fiscal affairs research that is essential to developing strategies to strengthen Indiana's economy and quality of life.
  • Center on Budget and Policy Priorities - The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities works at the federal and state levels on fiscal policy and public programs that affect low- and moderate-income families and individuals.
  • Child Trends - Child Trends is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and families by providing research and data to inform decision-making that affects children.
  • The Commonwealth Fund - The Commonwealth Fund is a private foundation that aims to promote a high performing health care system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, particularly for society's most vulnerable.
  • Cover the Uninsured - Cover the Uninsured, a project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is a national effort to highlight the fact that too many Americans are living without health insurance and demand solutions from our nation's leaders.
  • Families USA - Families USA is a national nonprofit, non-partisan organization working on the national, state, and community levels, dedicated to the achievement of high-quality, affordable health care for all Americans.
  • Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics - The Forum is a collection of Federal government agencies involved in research and activities related to children and families. The Forum fosters coordination and collaboration and enhances and improves consistency in the collection and reporting of Federal data on children and families.
  • Henry J. Kaiser Foundation - The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit, private foundation focusing on the major health care issues facing the U.S.
  • Let’s Move – First Lady Michelle Obama’s Campaign to tackle childhood obesity, which focuses on healthy choices, healthy schools, physical activity, and accessible and affordable healthy food.
  • March of Dimes - March of Dimes is a non profit organization dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
  • National Academy for State Health Policy - The National Academy for State Health Policy is an independent academy of state health policymakers working together to identify emerging issues, develop policy solutions, and improve state health policy and practice.
  • National Center for Health Statistics - The National Center for Health Statistics compiles statistical information into a public recourse for health information to guide actions and policies to improve the health of our people.
  • National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation -

    The National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of America's health care system.

    The Foundation conducts research, policy analysis and educational activities on a range of health care issues.

  • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center to Prevent Childhood Obesity - The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center to Prevent Childhood Obesity is a strong voice in the national movement to reverse the epidemic by 2015. Through policy analysis, leadership development, and communications with a broad network of advocates, the center is working to enable children of all races, ethnicities and geographic locations to eat healthy, be physically active and avoid obesity.
  • Safe Routes to SChool National Partnership - The Safe Routes to School National Partnership is a network of more than 400 nonprofit organizations, government agencies, schools, and professionals working together to advance the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) movement in the United States. SRTS can provide a variety of important benefits to children and their communities, including increasing physical activity, reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and enhancing neighborhood safety.
  • The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned  Pregnancy - The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy seeks to improve the lives and future prospects of children and families and, in particular, to help ensure that children are born into stable, two-parent families who are committed to and ready for the demanding task of raising the next generation.
  • Trust for America's Health - Trust for America's Health is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to saving lives by protecting the health of every community and working to make disease prevention a national priority.
  • Transportation for America - Transportation for America is a broad coalition of housing, business, environmental, public health, transportation, equitable development, and other organizations, working together to create a better transportation system that works for all Americans. They produce an annual Dangerous by Design report, which examines the problem and several solutions for the epidemic of preventable pedestrian deaths that far too many have simply accepted as matter of course.
  • UNICEF - UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.

  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.
