Issue Briefs on Kentucky Children in Immigrant and Refugee Families
Kentucky Youth Advocates is working on a series of four issue briefs on children in immigrant and refugee families:
- Race Matters (Fall 2007): Kentucky’s child population presents increasing diversity in race, ethnicity and country of birth. Ensuring equitable access to services and analyzing the impact of current policies and practices on child well-being necessitates a thorough understanding of the racial and ethnic demographics of Kentucky’s children. This report will examine the data and disparities in child well-being outcomes, as well as best practices and solutions presented by the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Race Matters Toolkit.
- Human trafficking, unaccompanied minors, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Visas (Winter 2007): This brief will focus on three specific legal issues that require legislative and/or practice-based solutions to ensure the safety of children in immigrant families and our communities.
- Civic engagement (Spring 2008): Immigrant and refugee youth are integrating and contributing to their communities in many ways. This brief will take a look at best practices for engaging youth in immigrant families in civic engagement, as well as highlight youth voice in Kentucky.
- Mental health services (Summer 2008): Some children in immigrant families experience trauma during their journey to Kentucky. This brief will take a qualitative and quantitative look at the experiences of youth and families in Kentucky as well as best practices for culturally and linguistically appropriate service delivery.
